Who is Bobby Greco?

If things went sideways and you got murdered, you’d want a top-notch homicide cop working your file. You’d want Bobby Greco.

When I sat down to write what became the Bobby Greco series, I wanted a character that the reader could connect with. The kind of guy you meet in a Starbucks and come away thinking, Hey, he was really nice.

Unlike the bumbling Colombo, Bobby has great social skills, which gives him an advantage when he’s interviewing witnesses and suspects. He’s no movie star, but handsome and thoughtful enough that women tend to like and trust him. Traits like this are invaluable to a murder cop – they break down barriers and get people to open up. Ask any homicide detective and they’ll tell you that getting people talking is crucial to an investigation.

Bobby still loves Janis, his ex-wife, and she loves him. The job cratered a marriage that should have worked, but there’s no going back and they both know it. There’s a hint of loss in Bobby that will never heal, and that makes him vulnerable. Bobby has kids, and to Sarah and Lizzie he’s the best dad ever. The girls are still young, seven and four, and they’re bright lights in Bobby’s life. When the kids are threatened in One is Evil, Bobby and Janis dig in to protect them. That doesn’t make them special, it makes them normal.

But Bobby has one skill – maybe even call it a gift – that makes him a hell of a good homicide cop. He notices things no one else does. Little things, seemingly of no consequence, that crack cases open. While it sets him apart, it also gets him swimming against the current because he’s the only one to believe the investigation should go in a certain direction.

I’ve created a lot of characters over the course of writing twenty-one books, and Bobby Greco is one of my favorites. Check him out in No End of Bad Guys, a novella you can pick up for free by signing up for my newsletter.

Until next time…
