Jeff’s Book Review: “Don’t Ask, Don’t Follow” by Mary Keliikoa

Check out my quick review below, and let me know your thoughts if you’ve read it, too.

    Review:
    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)

“This one has pretty much everything – a quirky twist, a dead lawyer (not going to comment on that), family issues that you’ll be glad you don’t have, a dog (sorry cozy lovers, no cat), and a likeable protagonist who just won’t stop until she figures things out.
Beth Ralston is that woman – a paralegal who wouldn’t take her wealthy father’s money that would have put her on easy street for a law degree – and while she stumbles at times as she pieces the mystery together, she’s someone you’re hoping for.
Why did Craig (the lawyer) get killed? Where is Lindsay (Beth’s sister and an investigative reporter) and why isn’t she answering her phone? Is Kai, the tatted up neighbor, who he seems to be? And what’s with the seemingly random DNA test? Lots of questions, and finding answers requires some serious digging.
A lot of time is spent in Beth’s head, so get ready for what can be long-winded narrative, but Keliikoa gives the reader all the necessary clues and leaves it up to them to sort things and solve the mystery.
Does everything work out? Well, you’ll have to dig in and give it a read to find out because there are no spoilers here.”

My Review: “The Man Who Died Twice: Thursday Murder Club #2”

Richard Osman, The Man Who Died Twice

    by Richard Osman

    My Review: 5 stars

The rabid bunch of octogenarians are back – Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron – with another pile of bodies…and diamonds. Twenty million pounds worth in fact. And an ex-husband (Elizabeth’s) has popped up as well. Then he gets killed. Bad timing. Or does he? Douglas (that’s his name), was a spy back in the day, like Elizabeth, so you’re never quite sure whether things are as they seem. But there is a dead letter drop (sneaky) and something left in storage locker 531 in Fairhaven Station. How much fun is that? Joyce is convinced that this is the best adventure ever, and I have to agree. Yes, Osman writes on the nose a bit, but he keeps hitting the ball out of the park. Loved it.

  • My Review: “The Longevity Economy: Unlocking the World’s Fastest-Growing, Most Misunderstood Market”

My Review: “The Longevity Economy: Unlocking the World’s Fastest-Growing, Most Misunderstood Market”

    by Joseph F Coughlin

    My Review:

People are aging and business – yes, you guys running the big corporations – are sadly lacking in understanding that as this massive demographic grows old, they want products that work with them and for them. So says Joseph F. Coughlin in The Longevity Economy, a thought-provoking book that digs into how and why business is failing people as they age, and how they could better serve this slice of the population. It’s a great read if you’re at or nearing retirement, and the only criticism I have is that Coughlin comes at some of the same points from different directions, and that gets a bit repetitious. Still, worth investing the time to give it a go.

My Review: “The Thursday Murder Club”

    The_Thursday_Murder_Club-Richard_Osman

    by Richard Osman

    My review: 5 stars

Get ready for a laugh fest with a group of four octogenarians who refuse to bow to old age. Osman takes an (often) invisible demographic and breathes life into them like a helium salesman at a birthday party.

With Joyce off on every tangent the human brain could possibly imagine, Elizabeth checking to make sure her tank license from her days as a British spy is still valid, and Ibrahim checking his stodginess in the mirror, that leaves Ron to reminisce about the days when he cratered any chance for the union guys to snag a fair deal.

Laugh-out-loud is putting it mildly. Osman takes the smallest bits of everyday life and injects comic TNT into them. I was constantly wondering – Why didn’t I think of that?

If you haven’t read The Thursday Murder Club yet, then lucky you. If you have, well, you know what I’m talking about.
