I hadn’t read anything by Hunsicker and wasn’t sure what I would be getting when I started this book, but I found out very quickly that the author can, and does, deliver a great story.

The action is fast out of the gate, when Dylan Fisher’s ex-wife gets killed in a brazen and targeted attack in broad daylight. Rose Doucette was a Dallas Homicide cop, so her death stirs up a proverbial hornet’s nest with most of the fingers pointing at Dylan as the shooter. (He didn’t do it, no spoiler there).

Dylan is left to clear himself as the chief suspect and puts his PI license to good use, sorting through the chafe and getting to the heart of why Rose was murdered. The cast of characters is varied, and Hunsicker gives you insights into who they are and why they act as they do by peeling back their layers bit by bit. No data dumps, no “telling”, just good old-fashioned skillful writing to deliver the characters’ idiosyncrasies.

The author ramps up the pace as the clues pile up and the end game begins to appear. And the ending does not disappoint.

This one is worth a look.
